Hobbledehoy,
What of questioning the CMRI's *charism* because of the founder/Schuckhardt? (As opposed to the validity of Holy Orders, which very well seems settled)
As others have noted, the Schuckhardt affair only serves to illustrate that it was Our Lady herself who was guiding the CMRI because they gave themselves over to total consecration and the perfect renewal of Baptismal vows according to the spiritual doctrine of St. Louis-Marie, and conformed themselves to the spirit thereof. It behooved Our Lady to show her predilect servants that they are not to rely on anyone other than her in order to continue an apostolate that was truly geared to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls, and so it was permitted by the elegance of God's inscrutable wisdom that things happened the way they did at the Mount.
Their charism consists in adapting True Devotion to their vocation as Priests and spiritual directors, and by word as well as by as example (above all, by example) to attract interior souls to this sublime form of spirituality.
As has been noted in times past, the fecundity of the CMRI consists in what St. Louis-Marie adequately named the "
the Secret of Mary."
For all intents and purposes, I regard their spiritual founder as St. Louis-Marie, whose example the CMRI Fathers have endeavored to emulate; Schuckhardt being an irrelevant footnote in the grand scheme of things, at best serving as a reminder that no human effort can be trusted outside of the patronage and tutelage of the Mother of God.
Even Rev. Fr. Chicone, whose courageous endeavors re-established the CMRI and contributed to its reparation from Schuckhardt's damage, would himself confess that he was a mere instrument of Our Lady.
Any CMRI Priest would also say the same. "We are just trying to do God's Will." "God alone," is what they say. At least this has been my experience.
