Teaching a 5-year old the Rosary?
« on: September 12, 2022, 07:44:38 PM »
How does one go about doing this? I've (finally) been able to take my daughter to Mass with me lately, and she knows the Hail Mary, but I don't know how to go about teaching her the Rosary to a degree that she understands what it is.

Also, any good suggestions for children's chapel veils? She has a chapel cap but doesn't like it and wants a (black) veil like the other girls. I've looked around and only really seen adult sized ones.

At five years old, I don't think you can teach her so that she really understands what it is.  Remember...She's five.  We started saying a daily rosary when my youngest was two or three.  By five, he could say the rosary with us--I really don't know how old he was when I found out he could say the rosary on his own.  I never really tried to teach any of the kids more than the mechanics of saying the rosary.  The kids have all read traditional books about the rosary as they grew up but I can't tell you precisely which ones and all of them tell me that they still pray a daily rosary (none of them live at home anymore).  The habit of a daily rosary has to be the first step.  They should learn about the rosary as they grow up through your catechism and Sunday sermons.

My youngest daughter was six when we started going to the traditional Mass and I also had ten and thirteen year old girls.  They all wore either hats or "adult size" veils according to their desire on any given Sunday.  One of my daughters liked to wear one of those round head coverings that look more like a doily than a veil but went to a mantilla later.

Okay, so I'll just stick to the basics of encouraging the Our Father and Hail Mary and move to that once she begins to understand a bit better.

Alright, I'll just keep looking around at what I've found so far. Maybe some ladies here on CI have some ideas. She has one of those "doilies" and it will not stay affixed to her hair, it's more of a nuisance than anything. Especially since she's still learning to sit still for Mass.

She could wear a black adult sizes mantilla. I sewed mine to a headband. All you have to do, is put the headband on, and it’s fixed firmly and never moves.

I don’t remember a time when we didn’t say the family Rosary. Regarding the mysteries, it is good to have a decent sized picture book where you can turn the pages fro mystery to mystery.

My eldest brother,Maurice, had a cerebral haemoraghe at birth and was physically and mentally handicapped, but before he could even speak he already knew all the mysteries. I think it was around age 3 or 4. My parents used to put him to the test by announcing the wrong mystery. He would be upset and protest.

But then he was an exceptional child.

Why does a five year old get to say what she wears?  Why does she get to wear what the older  girls wear?  Granted bonnets are old fashioned but a kerchief tied under her chin would keep it in place and not be a distraction and much more age appropriate.
Kids grow up fast enough without them copying older examples.  Make it a privilege of age, it'll teach self control sadly lacking in the youth of today.
In North America mantillas aren't even traditional.  They didn't come into use until AFTER Vat II when women needed something to put on their heads for the Latin Mass and hats were no longer the in thing.
