  • Degenerate. Thank God I only have one.
But my wife, unfortunately, has many.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

"In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." [Ecclus. 7:40]

"A holy man continueth in wisdom as the sun: but a fool is changed as the moon." [Ecclus. 27:12]

  • I think that the main problem with tattooing is that the practice is historically associated with paganism and, especially for a Catholic, could be seen as failing to treat one's body as the temple of the Holy Ghost.

[19] Or know you not, that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God; and you are not your own? [20] For you are bought with a great price. Glorify and bear God in your body.

    Interesting!

    Quote
The first historical account of the islands of Britain and Ireland was by Pytheas, a Greek from the city of Massalia, who around 310–306 BC, sailed around what he called the “Pretannikai nesoi,” or “Pretannic Isles.” “Pretani” or “Pritani” was understood on the European continent to mean “the land of the tattooed” or “the painted ones.”

When the Romans invaded Britain in 55 BC, they also found the Celtic-speaking natives to be resplendent in body art. In his account of the Gallic Wars, Caesar wrote,
“Al the Britons doe dye themselues wyth woad, which setteth a blewish color vppon them: and maketh them more terryble to beholde in battle.”
From “Pretani,” the name “Britain” was eventually derived. When the Normans arrived in 1066, they too discovered the Britons’ fondness for tattoos. In the 12th Century, the chronicler, William of Malmesbury, described how tattooing was one of the first practices the Normans adopted from the native British people.

  • I see no problem with a small Catholic tattoo other than it is altering God's creation. I don't know of any pronouncement of the Church, anyone have one? If the Church hasn't said anything maybe it's acceptable but not recommended. However, if the saints take makeup this seriously I really can't imagine what they would say of tattoos.

St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, Father of the Church (De Habit. Virg.):

    Quote
“I hold that not only virgins and widows, but also wives and all women without exception, should be admonished that nowise should they deface God’s work and fabric, the clay that He has fashioned, with the aid of yellow pigments, black powders or rouge, or by applying any dye that alters the natural features. . . They lay hands on God, when they strive to reform what He has formed. This is an assault on the Divine handiwork, a distortion of the truth. Thou shalt not be able to see God, having no longer the eyes that God made, but those the devil has unmade; with him shalt thou burn on whose account thou art bedecked.” (Quoted by St. Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church, in the Summa Theologica, Second Part of the Second Part, Q. 169, Art. 2)

St. Anthony Mary Claret, Archbishop of Santiago and Missionary:
    Quote
“Now, observe, my daughter, the contrast between the luxurious dress of many women, and the raiment and adornments of Jesus… Tell me: what relation do their fine shoes bear to the spikes in Jesus’ Feet? The rings on their hands to the nails which perforated His? The fashionable coiffure to the Crown of Thorns? The painted face to That [of Jesus] covered with bruises? Shoulders exposed by the low-cut gown to His, all striped with Blood? Ah, but there is a marked likeness between these worldly women and the Jєωs who, incited by the Devil, scourged Our Lord! At the hour of such a woman’s death, I think Jesus will be heard saying: ‘Cujus est imago haec... of whom is she the image?’ And the reply will be: ‘Demonii... of the Devil!’ Then He will say: ‘Let her who has followed the Devil’s fashions be handed over to him; and to God, those who have imitated the modesty of Jesus and Mary.’”

I’ve been saying for some years now that one could become wealthy overnight by inventing a quick, relatively painless, and inexpensive method of removing tattoos from elderly skin.

  • I've known some Coptics and sometimes they have small tattoos of the cross. Theirs were smaller than Fr. Mike's and on the triceps. I don't find those instances "offensvie" or Fr. Mike's, but tattoos don't suit me. There's no doubt that tattoo culture can be precipitate and go off the cliff.

Don't take it personally. It's weak people here who think you're a man named "Croix de Fer" (a banned member) against whom they still hold a grudge. So they react like children by down-thumbing you, and then they tell stories about how "Croix" down-thumbed them (when it probably didn't happen).
