Privacy Film for Bathroom Window

  • Has anyone used this for their bathroom (or any other) window?

We're looking to get some, but there are two options.  Adhesive and static cling.  There are positives and negatives to both.  Reviews seem to be inconsistent.  Static cling makes the most sense to me because it is easier to remove, but it sounds like it's not as opaque/good at night when lights are on in the room.

Also, if you used a certain product that you were happy with, please post the info!

  • We put the sticky kind on our basement bathroom window and it was on for 30 years.  Easy to wash, just use windex.
Renovated in 2019 and just peeled it off and reapplied new.
    Bought it at Walmart.

The only reason we changed was because now they have such pretty patterns.

Sticky as in adhesive?  And it came off easily?

We will be selling this house years down the road.  I want to make sure that if we go "adhesive" rather than "cling" that a prospective buyer can remove it if they don't want it (without damage).

  • Yes sticky as in peel off paper backing.
Came off in one piece, no residue.
As an aside, if you have sticky residue on a hard surface just rub with cooking oil and a paper towel.
That method also removes spagetti sauce stains from a rubber spatula.

  • I used an adhesive one for the panes of bathroom door.  It had to be cut to size, dipped briefly in water to activate the adhesive, and then applied and all air bubbles eased out.  A bit of a fiddle to do but that was 20 years ago and none of the applications have moved since.

I am afraid I do not remember the brand - but it did a good job.

  • You could also just get some thin, white curtains.  They let light in but block visibility.

Hmm.  If you dipped it in water, then I suspect that that is a cling version rather than an adhesive (they have their own adhesive backing).

Good idea or lace ones.  We have other window treatments for this room, but it's worth considering. We just had the windows and trim replaced, so all the window treatments will need to be installed again. The privacy film was a quick go-to given the windows are completely bare for the time being anyway.

  • Those "Gila" static cling-based ones are a HUGE pain in the butt to install. Last time I tried to install a couple (followed directions perfectly), they both fell off within a day. Not a fan.
