Whether he's OFFICIALLY "in the club" is not certain, but there's no doubt but that he had to make certain compromises or accommodations to said club ... and that explains IMO the darting eyes where he's got a troubled conscience, arguing with himself in his own head between his Catholic beliefs and his moral compromises. I believe that The Passion was his way of trying to seek a type of redemption, but then he slid right back into his life of sin, divorcing his wife and having a number of public adulterous affairs.
