  • Should one continue to give alms while in debt or would it be better to get out of debt first. Possibly middle ground would still be giving alms to a person's chapel/parish until debt is paid off and then freely afterwards?

  • You're not obligated to give what you don't have. That said, your chapel has legitimate expenses which members have an obligation to cover. It seems to me the best path forward is to make a plan to pay off your debt in a reasonable and realistic time frame, while leaving enough in your budget to regularly give a reasonable amount to our chapel.

I don't ever miss any payments and I no longer add to my debt but I do know I could pay it off faster if I didn't give alms outside of the churches I attend. I'll talk to my priest but this does seem like the reasonable approach. It came to my mind because of tax season.
